IWRM Implementation

The Water Resources Commission leads the implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) across Ghana to ensure the coordinated development and sustainable use of the country’s water resources. IWRM promotes the equitable and efficient management of water, land, and related resources to maximize social and economic welfare without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems.

Through basin-level planning and stakeholder engagement, WRC develops and implements IWRM Plans tailored to each river basin. These plans integrate water supply, ecosystem protection, pollution control, disaster risk reduction, and land use planning into a unified framework. The IWRM approach helps ensure that water use across sectors—agriculture, industry, domestic, and environmental—remains balanced, inclusive, and climate-resilient.

WRC also works closely with local institutions, traditional authorities, and community-based organizations to enhance awareness, build capacity, and support the long-term governance of water resources.
