Water Hazard Risk Management Initiatives

As part of its coordination mandate, the Water Resources Commission leads strategic efforts to manage and mitigate the risks associated with water-related hazards, particularly floods and droughts. These natural events pose serious threats to lives, property, and livelihoods across Ghana. Through Water Hazard Risk Management Initiatives, the WRC works with national and international partners to develop integrated and proactive responses that reduce vulnerability and enhance resilience.

These initiatives involve improved forecasting systems, early warning dissemination, hazard mapping, emergency preparedness planning, and support for climate-resilient water infrastructure. Under this pillar, the WRC also coordinates stakeholder actions, builds institutional capacities, and promotes community-level awareness and response mechanisms.

In collaboration with relevant agencies, the WRC is actively implementing Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) and contributing to national drought preparedness strategies to ensure timely and informed decision-making. By linking science, policy, and community engagement, we aim to protect people, ecosystems, and the economy from the growing impacts of extreme weather events and to support sustainable development in water-stressed and flood-prone regions of Ghana.
