Boosting Water Management: WRC Opens New Laboratory

The Water Resources Commission (WRC) has officially commissioned its laboratory as part of efforts to enhance water resources management and water quality monitoring in Ghana.

Since its establishment, the Commission has relied on external laboratories, primarily the Water Research Institute and the Ghana Standards Authority for water quality analysis.

Recognizing the need for an in-house facility to support its regulatory and monitoring mandate, the Commission has pursued the establishment of a laboratory over the years.A major milestone was achieved in the last quarter of 2024 with the acquisition of laboratory equipment donated by the Ghana Landscape and Small-Scale Mining Programme through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

The equipment acquired includes a Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) incubator, oven, autoclave, distiller, photometer, conductivity meter, pH meter, turbidity meter, among others.

Following the acquisition, the Commission commenced processes to set up the laboratoryy December 2025, the laboratory space had been completed, furnished, and equipped. All installed equipment was tested and confirmed to be functional.

The laboratory was officially commissioned on Thursday, 18 December 2025, by the Chairman of the Water Resources Commission Board, Daasebre Kwebu Ewusie VII. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Chairman commended the Commission and its partners for taking a significant step toward strengthening institutional capacity for water resources management.

Although the laboratory currently requires additional resources, equipment, and the necessary accreditation to operate at full capacity, its establishment represents a major step forward.

The Commission is committed to making the necessary arrangements to secure accreditation and procure additional equipment to ensure the laboratory’s effective and sustainable operation. The Water Resources Commission remains dedicated to protecting and managing Ghana’s water resources for sustainable development.
