Functions of the Water Resources Commission
The Water Resources Commission (WRC) is mandated to regulate, manage, and coordinate Ghana’s water resources to ensure their sustainable use and protection. The Commission plays a critical role in policy implementation, conservation efforts, and scientific research to support water security.
1.Regulation & Governance
- Oversee the equitable and sustainable utilization of Ghana’s water resources.
- Develop and enforce policies for integrated water resources management (IWRM).
- Grant and regulate water use rights for various sectors, ensuring compliance with national water laws.
2. Water Resource Planning & Development
- Formulate comprehensive strategies for conservation, development, and sustainable utilization of water resources.
- Initiate, coordinate, and supervise all activities related to water resource development, ensuring alignment with national policies.
3. Data Collection & Coordination
- Collect, collate and disseminate accurate data on Ghana’s water resources for informed decision-making.
- Require water user agencies to conduct scientific research and assessments to improve water resource management.
- Promote innovation and technological solutions for effective water conservation and distribution.
4. Monitoring & Evaluation
- Assess and evaluate water resource programs, ensuring operational efficiency and sustainability.
- Conduct periodic environmental impact assessments to safeguard water ecosystems.
5.Government & Advisory Role
- Provide strategic advice to the government on policy matters affecting water resources, ensuring long-term sustainability.
- Collaborate with pollution control agencies to manage and mitigate water contamination risks.
- Establish partnerships to promote transboundary water resource management and international cooperation.
6.Public Engagement & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Promote awareness campaigns on water conservation and responsible usage.
- Facilitate dialogues between communities, industries, and governmental bodies to ensure equitable water resource distribution.
7.Emergency Preparedness & Climate Resilience
- Develop frameworks to mitigate the impact of droughts, floods, and climate-related water challenges.
- Strengthen disaster preparedness efforts related to water security and management.
