Water Quality
Our Water Quality Focus
The Water Resources Commission supports the protection and sustainable management of Ghana’s surface and groundwater resources.
Water Testing
Assessment of physical, chemical, and biological water quality indicators.
Monitoring Data
Collection and analysis of water quality data from rivers, lakes, dams, and groundwater sources.
Pollution Control
Supporting actions that reduce contamination and protect aquatic ecosystems.
Water Quality Index (WQI)
The Water Quality Index (WQI) is a scientific tool used to evaluate the overall condition of water bodies by combining multiple water quality parameters into a single, easy-to-understand score.
What it Measures
The WQI considers key indicators such as pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, temperature, and contaminants to assess the health of water resources.
Why it Matters
It helps policymakers, stakeholders, and the public understand whether water is safe for drinking, agriculture, and ecosystem sustainability.
WQI Classification
- 80 – 100: Good to Excellent
- 50 – 79: Fairly Good
- 25 – 49: Poor quality
- 0 – 24: Grossly Polluted quality
WRC uses WQI as part of its monitoring framework to provide a clear picture of water quality trends across Ghana.
