Welcome to the Water Resources Commission (WRC) of Ghana
In this era of rapid increase in population and the devastating impact of climate change, couple with heightened environmental awareness, the sustainable management and conservation of water resources has never been more critical. As we witness growing demand for water in all sectors of life, ensuring the availability and quality of this precious resource is at the heart of our work at the Water Resources Commission.
The Water Resources Commission was established by an act of parliament (Act 522 of 1996) as the overall body responsible for water resources management (governance) in Ghana. Specifically, the mandate of the WRC is to regulate and manage the utilization of Ghana’s water resources (conserve, protect and allocate), manage extreme events relating to water resources, coordinate government policies on water, and coordinate Transboundary water resources.
With decades of experience in water management and policy implementation, we play a central role in ensuring that water resources are utilized sustainably, efficiently, and equitably across the country.
As an institution, the WRC is committed to promoting Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) practices to support economic growth, environmental sustainability, and the well-being of all Ghanaians. We are proud to work alongside national and international stakeholders to ensure that the water resources of Ghana remain available for generations to come. Our dynamic and dedicated team of professionals, headquartered at our office in Accra and the seven basin offices across the country, work tirelessly to develop and implement effective policies, strategies, and projects aimed at addressing water challenges.
The value of water in sustaining life, supporting agriculture, industry, and maintaining ecosystems cannot be overstated. With this in mind, the WRC is dedicated to providing comprehensive and up-to-date information on the management and conservation of water resources in Ghana. Our responsibilities include overseeing the regulation of water use, ensuring compliance with environmental standards, facilitating the sustainable development of water resources, and educating the public on the importance of water conservation.
As we move forward, the Water Resources Commission remains committed to fostering a sustainable and water-secure future for all Ghanaians.
