Corporate Profile – Water Resources Commission (WRC), Ghana

Introduction
Established under the Water Resources Commission Act, 1996 (Act 522), the Water Resources Commission (WRC) serves as the principal institution responsible for the regulation, management, and coordination of Ghana’s water resources. With a legal mandate to oversee both surface and groundwater, the Commission works to ensure the sustainable utilization and protection of these vital natural resources.

Mission
To regulate and manage the sustainable utilization of water resources and to coordinate related policies by combining our core competencies and hard work through effective participation, monitoring, and awareness creation for the socio-economic development of Ghana.

Core Responsibilities
The WRC’s responsibilities are broad and strategic, including:

  • Granting water rights and developing regulations for water use.
  • Coordinating national and local water resources planning.
  • Collecting, storing, and disseminating data on water availability and quality.
  • Monitoring water resource programs for sustainability and conservation.
  • Advising the government and agencies on water pollution control and water governance.
  • Facilitating dialogue on the management of transboundary water resources.
