ANKOBRA BASIN

The Ankobra Basin is located in the South-Western part of Ghana. Covering portions of the Western North, Western and Central Regions. It spans a total of 8500 km2. The Ankobra River which is the main river in the basin originates near Wiawso and flows southwards into the Atlantic Ocean at Sanwoma in the Nzema East Municipality.

The basin comprises of sub-basins such as Bonsa and Mansi. These sub-basins play vital roles in supporting agriculture, water supply, mining activities and ecological balance.

The basin is rich in biodiversity and natural resources, but it faces significant threats from human activities, particularly illegal mining which contributes to water pollution, buffer zone degradation and deforestation.

Basin Activities

The Basin ensures the implementation of the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) plan for sustainable use and protection of water resource es in the basin.

Some key activities in the basin includes

  • Water Use Permitting; conducting technical inspections for agricultural, mining and industrial water users as part of their permit processing.
  • Compliance monitoring; regular monitoring of water users to ensure their compliance with conditions of permit.
  • Stakeholder Engagement; participating in stakeholder forums, durbars and sensitization campaigns to raise awareness on management of water resources.
  • Collaborative Projects
  • World Water Day Celebration.

Through these interventions, the Secretariat works with stakeholders across sectors to ensure that the IWRM principles equity, efficiency and sustainability are fully integrated into the management of water resources in the basin.
