Executive Secretary of Water Resources visits the Densu Basin

The Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission (WRC), Prof. Seidu Alidu embarked on a strategic tour of basin offices with a visit to the Densu Basin Office. The visit aimed to assess operational activities, engage with staff, and address key challenges and opportunities for improved water resource management.

During his engagement with staff at the Basin Office, a comprehensive presentation was delivered to the Executive Secretary, detailing the basin’s mandate, key activities, current challenges, and recommendations for improvement.

As part of the visit, Prof. Alidu paid a courtesy call on the Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Awatey. In welcoming the delegation, the Minister acknowledged the persistent challenge of illegal mining (commonly known as galamsey) in the region, particularly among the youth. She emphasized that addressing this issue requires the provision of sustainable employment opportunities and the implementation of community-based education and awareness campaigns. According to her, equipping the youth with viable alternatives is essential to shifting mindsets and discouraging involvement in environmentally destructive activities.

Hon. Awatey highlighted the need for strong institutional collaboration and partnerships to create job opportunities that can deter young people from engaging in environmentally harmful practices. She reaffirmed the Eastern Region’s readiness to support the WRC’s proposals, recommendations, and sustainable interventions aimed at safeguarding the country’s water resources.

Prof. Alidu commended staff at the basin for their dedication, especially considering the vastness of the catchment spanning the Eastern, Greater Accra, and Central Regions. He acknowledged the challenges they face and assured them of his commitment to addressing their concerns, starting with the most pressing ones.

The Executive Secretary’s visit offered a valuable opportunity to gain practical insight into the operations of the Densu Basin and marked a renewed commitment to strengthening collaboration between the Commission and its stakeholders. His tour underscores the Commission’s continued dedication to sustainable water resource management and institutional development.
