The Water Resources Commission (WRC) implements Ghana’s Water Use Policy to guide the sustainable, equitable, and efficient allocation and use of the country’s water resources. The policy ensures that water is recognized not only as an economic good but also as a social and environmental necessity.
Under this framework, water use is regulated through a permit system, requiring individuals, organizations, and industries to apply for and obtain water use rights. This system helps prevent conflicts, over-abstraction, and pollution, while ensuring fair access to water for domestic, agricultural, industrial, hydropower, and environmental needs.
The WRC monitors compliance, promotes water conservation practices, and works closely with stakeholders to raise awareness of responsible water use. The policy also aligns with national development priorities and supports the goals of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), contributing to Ghana’s resilience in the face of population growth, urbanization, and climate change.
By enforcing the Water Use Policy, WRC protects water resources today—and secures them for generations to come.
